Salem Saberhagen[4] is a black cat who was turned into a cat by the Witches' Council due to some trouble he got himself in (world domination). However, the Toon Disney website states that three young witches he was watching over got to access to a spell they weren't allowed to use and this turned him into a cat. He now resides in Greendale with the Spellman family. He is voiced by Nick Bakay in the first series (who reprised his role from the 1996 sitcom series); Louis Chirillo in Friends Forever, and Maurice LaMarche in Secret Life.

Appearance[]

Salem is a black shorthair cat wearing a golden collar with a red gemstone attached. Sometimes he wears a red and black jacket/robe.

In Sabrina: Friends Forever, Salem's design is changed a little bit. He is a lighter grey color (to some people, this could still be interpreted as black) and wears a blue collar, attached a golden amulet, which he bought from Spike for 20 dollars.

Salem was changed back to his first design in Sabrina's Secret Life, all that's changed is he was given yellow eyes, and his fur color is noticably more purple-ish in color.

Personality[]

Salem is an experienced warlock and has over 800 years of knowledge with magic, but does not use it wisely. He often uses it for his own selfish reasons, such as when he lost a cat show. This is how he turned into a cat in the first place, the comics state that "he got greedy thinking he should rule the world." He presumably used magic to attempt this. He mostly resents being a cat, except when it benefits him, as proven in some episodes and the comics.

When Sabrina has a problem and wants to fix it with magic, Salem often encourages her, or even supplies her with a magical object to help her fix her problem, which usually makes things worse for Sabrina. For example, in "No Time To Be A Hero," he gives her an hourglass that allows her to go back in time. In "Anywhere But Here," Salem gave Sabrina the watch that she uses to fast-forward herself to adulthood. Nonetheless, he has a great big heart and cares for Sabrina.
